Jo Desha wrote this letter August 25, 1861, at Camp Bartow, near Manassas, Virginia, to his brothers, Cave and Lucius Clay. It describes the aftermath of the first battle of Bull Run (Manassas), the possible invasion of Kentucky by Union forces, and Confederate activity in Harrison County, Kentucky, such as the burning of Robertson Bridge. Other subjects discussed are the death of Desha's men from fever, the burial methods of Union soldiers, and army music.
